CABLEVISION'S POWER TO LEARN AND CONGRESSMAN MIKE FERGUSON TEAM UP TO SUPPORT TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION
Roundtable Discussion On Controlling Your TV, Media Literacy and
Internet Smarts Followed By 6th Grade Class Presentation On Safe And
Appropriate Online Behavior
Bridgewater, NJ – October 12, 2005 –
Cablevision Systems Corporation's Power to Learn, a multi-faceted initiative
dedicated to integrating technology into education, will host an interactive,
educational two-part event with Congressman Mike Ferguson, members of the New
Jersey Parent Teacher Association and students in support of the educational
benefits of equipping local schools with advanced broadband services while
protecting students from inappropriate on-screen and online content. The event will take place at the
Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School on Wednesday, October 12, from 10:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m.
"Cablevision
has a long history of supporting the use of technology in education. As the ISP and cable television provider to
thousands of schools throughout the New York metropolitan area, we know
technology is indispensable to education," said Trent Anderson, Cablevision's
vice president of education. "We are
extremely excited to bring the Bridgewater education community together to
further our commitment to enhancing education through technology, and ensuring
that technology is utilized appropriately to make a meaningful impact in K-12
classrooms."
The
event will include a roundtable discussion led by Power to Learn and the New
Jersey PTA in the school library with parents and local education leaders
focusing on media literacy, controlling the television and safe and responsible
Internet use for children. Following
this discussion, Sheila Van Diver's 6th grade computer class will
present a lesson from Power to Learn's Internet Smarts program titled Keeping
Personal Information Private.
"As a former
teacher I understand the growing importance of technology in education and am
pleased to see Power to Learn making a concerted effort in our community to
address the concerns of educators and parents with its Internet Smarts and
Control Your TV initiatives," said Congressman Mike Ferguson. "It's wonderful
to see our community come together to support safe an appropriate usage of
technology in education."
"Our children live in a world
much different than when we were their age. We must do our best to stay
ahead of the curve and address not only their present needs but also do our
best to project their future needs," said Dr. Walter Mahler, Bridgewater-Raritan Regional
School District Superintendent. "Cablevision is cooperating with us to do exactly that
with this Internet safety program."
Power
to Learn's Internet Smarts program
provides a forum for teachers and parents to work with children on appropriate
and safe Internet use. Online,
interactive case studies explore important topics in Internet use at school and
at home, allowing students to examine issues affecting schoolwork, class papers,
entertainment activities and online safety.
Additionally, students, classes and schools can become certified
"Internet Smart." Family resource booklets titled, "Internet Smarts:
Safeguarding your Children in Cyberspace," are also provided in both English
and Spanish, offering important tips and suggestions to keep kids safe
online. Internet Smarts is a free
resource offered to schools. More

Control
Your TV is
a National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA) cable industry
initiative, which Cablevision has taken an active roll in by providing and
promoting the tools that enable customers to control the programming viewed in
their homes. Power to Learn extends
this commitment by informing and training teachers and parents on how to
program channel blocking functions through the set-top box.
Power
to Learn, Cablevision's nationally recognized education initiative, empowers
K-12 learning in the tri-state area by making technology in the classroom
useful and by facilitating the home-school connection. Today, more than 2,000 schools and libraries
throughout Cablevision's New York metropolitan service area receive high-speed
Internet access and more than 85 percent of schools in Cablevision's service
area receive free cable television service as a result of this initiative. In addition, teachers, students and parents benefit from innovative educational
content and tools available on www.powertolearn.com,
a broadband Web resource dedicated to
facilitating K-12 learning and the home-school connection.
