CONGRESSMAN TIM BISHOP & CABLEVISION'S "POWER TO LEARN" TEAM UP TO KEEP KIDS SAFE IN CYBERSPACE

Hampton Bays Students Among First On Long Island To Be Certified "Internet Smart"

Hauppauge, NY - December 13, 2004 - Two-dozen sixth grade students from Hampton Bays Elementary School are among the first classes on Long Island to be certified "Internet Smart" from Cablevision's Power to Learn educational team, who recently taught the students about safe, responsible and ethical Internet use. Today, the students received a visit from Congressman Tim Bishop and were excited to tell him what they had learned about guarding their personal information and privacy, properly and ethically downloading copyrighted music or other creative works, and other smart practices to be used when the class engages in on-line activities in school or at home.

"I wanted to see first hand what kind of role we can play in teaching children appropriate online behavior and safe Internet use. It is essential that we provide students, parents and educators access to Cablevision's practical and educational Internet Smarts program. We applaud Cablevision for taking this step toward protecting our children when they engage in online activities," said Congressman Bishop.

"As the ISP provider to nearly 2000 schools in Cablevision's service area, we know that the Internet is indispensable to education," said Trent Anderson, Cablevision's vice president of education. "We designed Internet Smarts to provide students with guidelines to be safe, responsible and ethical Internet users, and we are extremely excited and proud to have the support of The Honorable Vivian Viloria-Fisher."

Online, interactive case studies were used to explore important topics in Internet use at school and at home, allowing students to examine issues affecting their online safety. Safety, however, is just one component of the initiative: music downloading and copyright rules are among the other current topics explored. Individuals, classes and schools can become certified "Internet Smart" by completing "Internet Smarts: Safeguarding your Children in Cyberspace," a family resource booklet that provides parents with quick, important tips and suggestions on proper Internet use. Power to Learn, Cablevision's nationally recognized education initiative, empowers K-12 learning in the tri-state area by making technology in the classroom useful and by facilitating the home-school connection. By the end of 2004, more than 2,100 schools and libraries throughout Cablevision's New York metropolitan service area will receive high-speed Internet access and more than 85% of schools in Cablevision's service area will receive free cable television service as a result of this initiative.
