CONGRESSWOMAN CAROLYN McCARTHY, NEW YORK LIBERTY'S KYM HAMPTON & CABLEVISION'S "POWER TO LEARN" TEAM UP TO ENCOURAGE READING DURING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
McCarthy Honors Fourth Graders from New Visions Museum School of Exploration and Discovery as "School of the Month" for Joining Cablevision's "Virtual Reading Zone"
Who: Students from Ms. Lulay's fourth grade class, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, WNBA New York Liberty Player Kym Hampton and Cablevision's Power to Learn team.
What: In celebration of Woman's History Month, successful women role models from government and sports are teaming up with Cablevision's Power To Learn, the Knicks Virtual Reading Zone and the New York Liberty to encourage children to read.
Power to Learn gave each student a complimentary copy of Ruby Bridges' book, "Through My Eyes," to read. The book recounts Bridges' experience as a six-year-old black child being escorted to school by federal marshals in 1960s Louisiana. McCarthy selected the book to highlight Women's History Month. The students will discuss Bridges' life story with Congresswoman McCarthy. Liberty star player Kym Hampton will be on hand to congratulate the students on their achievement.
At www.powertolearn.com, this program motivates kids to read by combining their favorite sports personalities with rewards and incentives, including personalized postcards from their favorite Knicks and Liberty players. In addition, schools can get involved in the Virtual Reading Zone, which provides students with book donations and incentives based on reading goals set by their teacher.
When: Monday, March 7, 2005, 1PM - 2PM
Where: New Visions Museum School of Exploration and Discovery, 80 Raynor Street, Freeport, NY
