FIRST SELECTWOMAN DIANE FARRELL & CABLEVISION'S POWER TO LEARN TEAM UP TO HELP PARENTS KEEP KIDS SAFE IN CYBERSPACE
Kings Highway Elementary PTA To Be Certified "Internet Smart"
Westport, CT April 26, 2005 - PTA parents of Kings Highway Elementary School students will be certified "Internet Smart," thanks to Cablevision's Power to Learn initiative. On Wednesday, April 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Westport parents will learn about "Keeping Personal Information Private," and other topics designed to help families safely navigate the World Wide Web.
Following welcoming remarks by First Selectwoman Diane Farrell, Cablevision Power to Learn staff will conduct the interactive, one-hour workshop. Using interactive case studies, Cablevision's Power to Learn "Internet Smarts" program is designed to instruct young people and their parents about all aspects of safe and appropriate Internet use. Presented by members of the Power to Learn staff, the workshop helps parents establish basic guidelines for students' Internet use to ensuring their online safety. Topics include talking with their kids about what information should and shouldn't be shared online, as well as what constitutes appropriate interaction with online "friends."
Mrs. Farrell stated, "I'm delighted to support Cablevision's Power To Learn "Internet Smarts" program. It's vital that parents and teachers have the latest information and knowledge to keep our children safe while using the Internet. Cablevision is to be commended for providing this workshop to our residents."
The media is invited to attend the April 27th event at Kings Highway Elementary School. For more event details or to RSVP, contact Christine Klimek, Community and Media Relations Manager for Cablevision of Connecticut, at (203) 750-5614 or (203) 984-6108.
"As the ISP provider to more than 2,000 schools in Cablevision's service area, we know the Internet is indispensable to education," said Trent Anderson, Cablevision's vice president of education. "We designed Internet Smarts to provide students with guidance and guidelines to be safe, responsible and ethical Internet users, and we are extremely excited and proud to be a part of this event and have the support of First Selectwoman Diane Farrell."
Power to Learn's Internet Smarts program provides a forum for teachers and parents to work with children on appropriate and safe Internet use. Online, interactive case studies explore important topics in Internet use at school and at home, allowing students to examine issues affecting schoolwork, class papers, entertainment activities and online safety. Additionally, students, classes and schools can become certified "Internet Smart" and "Internet Smarts: Safeguarding your Children in Cyberspace," a family resource booklet, provides parents with quick, but important, tips and suggestions.
