SUFFOLK COUNTY LEGISLATOR VIVIAN VILORIA-FISHER & CABLEVISION'S POWER TO LEARN TEAM UP TO KEEP KIDS SAFE IN CYBERSPACE
Minnesauke Students: First Class On Long Island To Be Certified "Internet Smart"
Hauppauge, NY - December 8, 2004 - Twenty-five sixth grade students from Minnesauke Elementary School became the first class on Long Island to be certified "Internet Smart" from Cablevision's Power to Learn educational team, who recently taught the students about safe and responsible Internet use. Today, the students presented to Suffolk County Legislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher what they have learned about Internet safety.
Viloria-Fisher, a life-long educator, visited the class to hear first-hand what the students have learned about guarding their personal information and their privacy while engaging in on-line activities. The class is part of Cablevision's Power to Learn's new program, Internet Smarts, to inform children, parents and educators about appropriate online behavior and safe Internet use. The forty-minute class presentation took place Wednesday, December 8, 2004 in Ms. Geikie's class at Minnesauke Elementary School.
"We all play a role in teaching children appropriate online behavior and safe Internet use. It is important to empower students, teachers and parents by making this practical and educational initiative available to Suffolk County residents. I am proud to support Cablevision's Internet Smarts program because we both care about protecting our children when they access the Internet," said Suffolk County Legislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher.
"As the ISP provider to nearly 2000 schools in Cablevision's service area, we know that the Internet is indispensable to education," said Trent Anderson, Cablevision's vice president of education. "We designed Internet Smarts to provide students with guidelines to be safe, responsible and ethical Internet users, and we are extremely excited and proud to have the support of The Honorable Vivian Viloria-Fisher."
Online, interactive case studies were used to explore important topics in Internet use at school and at home, allowing students to examine issues affecting their online safety. Safety, however, is just one component of the initiative: music downloading and copyright rules are among the other current topics explored. Individuals, classes and schools can become certified "Internet Smart" by completing "Internet Smarts: Safeguarding your Children in Cyberspace," a family resource booklet that provides parents with quick, important tips and suggestions on proper Internet use. Power to Learn, Cablevision's nationally recognized education initiative, empowers K-12 learning in the tri-state area by making technology in the classroom useful and by facilitating the home-school connection. By the end of 2004, more than 2,100 schools and libraries throughout Cablevision's New York metropolitan service area will receive high-speed Internet access and more than 85% of schools in Cablevision's service area will receive free cable television service as a result of this initiative.
