CABLEVISION'S POWER TO
LEARN AND MAYOR MICHAEL BRODERICK TEAM UP TO KEEP KIDS SAFE IN CYBERSPACE
Special Event At Elms
Elementary School To Educate Parents, Students and Teachers About Safe Online
Behavior June 16 at 10:30 a.m.
Jackson, NJ – June 15, 2005 – Cablevision Systems Corporation's Power
to Learn, a multi-faceted initiative dedicated to integrating technology into
education, will host an interactive, educational event with Mayor Michael
Broderick on safe and responsible Internet use for children. The event will take place at Elms Elementary
School on June 16, at 10:30 a.m.
"We
all have to play a role in teaching children appropriate online behavior and
safe Internet usage," said Mayor Michael Broderick. "Jackson was one of
the first municipalities in New Jersey to offer parents numerous links to
safety information that will help parents keep their families out of harms way
while online. Cablevision's Internet Smarts program will give students,
teachers, and parents the knowledge they need to safely navigate the Internet."
Power to Learn's
Internet Smarts program provides a
forum for teachers and parents to work with children on appropriate and safe
Internet use. Online, interactive case
studies explore important topics in Internet use at school and at home,
allowing students to examine issues affecting schoolwork, class papers,
entertainment activities and online safety.
Additionally, students, classes and schools can become certified
"Internet Smart." Family resource booklets titled, "Internet Smarts:
Safeguarding your Children in Cyberspace," are also provided, offering important
tips and suggestions to keep kids safe online.
Internet Smarts is a free resource offered to schools. More information can be found at www.powertolearn.com.
"As Power to
Learn continues to connect schools and libraries throughout New Jersey with
cable broadband access, online behavior has become an increasingly important
issue within the communities we serve," said Adam Falk, Cablevision's vice
president of New Jersey public affairs.
"Internet Smarts is an excellent example of how Power to Learn enhances the broadband connectivity it provides by
creating a practical, useful program to educate students, teachers and parents
about important online issues, from copyright and fair use to addressing
the dangers of disclosing private information online."
"As the ISP
provider to more than 2,000 schools in Cablevision's service area, we know that
the Internet is indispensable to education," said Trent Anderson, Cablevision's
vice president of education. "We
designed Internet Smarts to provide students with guidance and guidelines to be
safe, responsible and ethical Internet users, and we are extremely excited and
proud to be a part of this event."
Power to Learn,
Cablevision's nationally recognized education initiative, empowers K-12
learning in the tri-state area by making technology in the classroom useful and
by facilitating the home-school connection.
Today, more than 2,000 schools and libraries throughout Cablevision's
New York metropolitan service area receive high-speed Internet access and more
than 85 percent of schools in Cablevision's service area receive free cable
television service as a result of this initiative. In addition, teachers, students and parents benefit from
innovative educational content and tools
available on www.powertolearn.com, a
broadband Web resource dedicated to
facilitating K-12 learning and the home-school connection.
