CABLEVISION'S POWER TO LEARN AND C-SPAN TEAM TO OFFER LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME LEARNING EXPERIENCE AT REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION
BETHPAGE, NY - September 2, 2004 - Power to Learn, Cablevision Systems Corporation's nationally recognized education initiative, has partnered with C-SPAN to give local students an unforgettable, non-partisan glimpse into the democratic process by attending the Republican National Convention.
Students from Watchung Hills Regional High School in New Jersey and Bethpage High School on Long Island had the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the convention - from experiencing the high-tech security and talking to snipers to interfacing with delegates, touring the convention floor and gaining a first-hand look at convention media coverage with C-SPAN, the only network offering gavel to gavel coverage of the convention. In addition, students had the opportunity to discuss issues with elected officials from their hometowns. Power to Learn helped prepare students for this important event, which will culminate in the students documenting their experiences in an online Web journal at Powertolearn.com.
"We are pleased, in partnership with C-SPAN, to be taking advantage of this unique opportunity for students to engage in and learn about our political process by attending a national political convention," said Trent Anderson, Cablevision's vice president of education. "Our goal is to provide these students with a firm understanding of all the things that go into a convention and the singular place this event occupies in our political process. The final benefit, both for these students and many others, will be the documentation of this valuable experience on the Powertolearn.com Web site.
"This was an incredibly unique educational opportunity for these students who gained a great deal of insight into the political process," said Terrence Clark, assistant superintendent for instruction and technology of the Bethpage school district. "We are thrilled Power to Learn partnered with CSPAN on this project bringing a very meaningful learning experience to these students."
On Monday, New Jersey students visited with Congressman Mike Ferguson (R- NJ) and on Tuesday, Bethpage, NY students met with Senator Carl Louis Marcellino (R- NY). With the FUSE studio right across the street from the convention, students also had the opportunity to take part in a special live broadcast from the Republican National Convention of FUSE's "Daily Download," a live, daily one hour show showcasing the hottest new music videos, featuring special live performances from today's hottest artists.
Of the over ½ million students in Cablevision's Power to Learn community, the nine students who attended this unique learning opportunity were chosen by their high schools to represent their communities.
