THE WEATHER CHANNEL AND CABLEVISION'S POWER TO LEARN TEAM UP TO SUPPORT THE ENVIRONMENT THROUGH EDUCATION

Broadband Delivers Environmental Education Resources to Homes and Schools

Atlanta, GA and Bethpage, NY April 11, 2005 - The Weather Channel and Power to Learn, Cablevision's nationally recognized education initiative, have launched innovative new resources for teaching important environmental concepts to middle and high school students that are now available through www.powertolearn.com. The cornerstone of this new online program, Watershed Worries: Protecting the Quality of Our Water, is aligned to Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York state standards and presents important information on water quality and flood safety in a made-for-broadband format.

"Power to Learn is proud to partner with The Weather Channel in helping to address one of our community's most important environmental concerns. Providing educational resources to teachers, parents and students on protecting our environment is another component of Power to Learn that gives back to the communities we serve in meaningful ways," said Trent Anderson, Cablevision's vice president of education. "The power of broadband coupled with this relevant, high-quality multi-media content will help encourage students to understand and explore solutions to this important issue."

Components of the new Watershed Worries program at www.powertolearn.com include:
  • Before the Flood, a self-guided, interactive puzzle challenging students to piece together events surrounding a flood and presents important information on water quality and flood safety.
  • After the Storm downloadable video clips from an episode in the Forecast Earth series from The Weather Channel. The program examines the connection between weather and watersheds and discusses the importance of watershed protection. A teacher's guide to accompany the episode is also available at www.weatherclassroom.com.
  • Ask the Expert, a feature that puts students in touch with experts from the Environmental Protection Agency and The Weather Channel.
  • Additional Resources, a guide that provides students and teachers with additional resources for more information on water quality, flooding, severe weather safety, and what can be done to help protect the environment.
"Cablevision's Power to Learn is a great vehicle for showcasing resources provided by The Weather Channel - accurate weather data, world-class weather experts, and stunning weather footage. Broadband delivery enables the combination of all of these elements in a way that saves teachers' time and gives students multiple ways of connecting to important information and issues," said Marla Hoppenfeld, vice president of customer marketing at The Weather Channel. "It's a great partnership."

This fall, students will have a chance to win valuable prizes for themselves and their schools by showcasing their knowledge and creativity. Using information and multimedia content provided by The Weather Channel and Power to Learn, students will be able to create and submit an original Public Service Announcement promoting awareness of water quality issues and what people can do to help protect our valuable water supplies. A panel of judges from The Weather Channel, Cablevision, and the EPA will review contest entries.

Power to Learn, Cablevision's nationally recognized education initiative, empowers K-12 learning in the tri-state area by making technology in the classroom useful and by facilitating the home-school connection. More than 2,000 schools and libraries throughout Cablevision's New York metropolitan service area receive high-speed Internet access and more than 85 percent of schools in Cablevision's service area receive free cable television service as a result of this initiative. In addition, teachers, students and parents benefit from innovative educational content and tools available on www.powertolearn.com, a broadband Web resource dedicated to facilitating K-12 learning and the home-school connection.
