Read Naturally--for Blind & Visually Impaired Students
by Dr. Merle Marsh

Read Naturally Masters Edition (ME) is designed to help blind and visually impaired students with reading skills for Grades 1 to 8, but it can also be used for intervention for Grades 1 through adult levels. The program is based on the following strategy: teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. Using audio support and blackline masters, students read along with a recording, practice reading on their own, and graph their progress. The recordings are high quality and feature professional voices reading key words, definitions, and stories. Students can go through three different-paced recordings of a story.

Read Naturally steps to improvement are:
  • Selecting a story
  • Reading along to keywords
  • Writing a prediction of what the story is about
  • Timing and graphing a first try through the story
  • Reading along with a recording of the story
  • Rereading without the recording
  • Answering story questions
  • Working with a teacher to time reading
  • Graphing progress
  • Retelling the story
  • Practicing word lists
Focusing upon fluency in reading, vocabulary development, comprehension, reading speed, understanding of phonics, and improving Braille fluency, Read Naturally includes teacher's manuals, professional development, and support.

To enhance Read Naturally (ME), a resource CD is now available. Included on the CD are story files to print in Braille, large print text files, placement files, and Braille help files.
