Adolfo Carrión, Jr. Bronx Borough President
On February 26, 2004, Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión, Jr.delivered his State of the Borough address at Evander Childs High School in the Bronx. Power to Learn is pleased to offer students the opportunity to read the transcript of his speech and ask questions.
The son of a minister, Carrión has devoted his career since graduating from Kings College (then in Westchester) to public service, as an associate pastor at a Bronx church, as a public school teacher in the West Bronx and, after earning a Master's in Urban Planning from the City University's Hunter College (he is the only elected official in New York City with an Urban Planning degree), in other public sector capacities. full bio >>

Q: What made you decide to pursue a career in politics? - Mariella, 12th Grade Student
A: I grew up in a family that considered helping others an important part of life. So, a life committed to public service became a natural choice for me.

Q: In your speech you talk about development around Yankee Stadium. What are some of the things you would like to see happen there? - Edwin, 12th Grade Student
A: We are planning to have restaurants, stores, and other entertainment venues surround the Yankee Stadium neighborhood.

Q: What are some things we as students can do in our schools to help to make a difference in education for all students in the Bronx? - Roberto, 11th Grade Student
A: First and foremost, students can excel in school by studying hard and being a leader in their schools.

Q: What advice would you give to students preparing to graduate this spring? - Miguel, 12th Grade Student
A: Your education does not end after you graduate from school. Whether preparfing for college or not, make certain you develop skills so that you can enjoy a meaningful job and carreer. Also, the Bronx has wonderful sites for learning, like our museums, libraries, the Botanical Garden, Bronx Zoo, and more.
