Centereach, NY, February 17, 2012 - Dawnwood Middle School received a $2,000 grant from Cablevision for their role in encouraging students to go online and sign the Power to Learn Delete Cyberbullying pledge. The check was presented to Principal Linda Peyser, who accepted on behalf of the school. Brookhaven Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh recognized students for their commitment and spoke about the potential consequences of online bullying.
Video of Event (00:53 mins)Schools from throughout Cablevision's tri-state service area were invited to participate in the Delete Cyberbullying pledge drive, with 10 schools - including Dawnwood Middle School - declared winners for producing the most signatures. More than 40,000 students signed the pledge, with 29,015 pledges coming from the winning schools.
"Cyberbullying is a growing challenge facing young people today and the consequences can be devastating. Perhaps the best way to combat this problem is to have students themselves speak out against it," said Councilwoman Walsh. "I commend Cablevision's Power to Learn for this innovative program that engages students and is sure to have a positive effect on others."
