When you go to see a concert or a show, as soon as the curtain goes up, the performance begins and you are caught up in the excitement of the event. However, there is a lot that takes place before that curtain rises. Shows need to be booked and put on the schedule. This includes concerts, kid's shows and special events. The same people who book Radio City Music Hall also book a wide range of shows, including the circus into Madison Square Garden, which has a main arena as well as a separate theater. On a busy night, there might be a basketball or hockey game taking place at the MSG arena, a play being staged at the Theater at Madison Square Garden and a concert going on at Radio city Music Hall. That's a lot to coordinate. Once shows are booked and contracts are signed by all of the people involved, the promotion and public relations teams swing into action. Press releases are written, media events and promotional activities are planned and pretty soon there is a buzz all over town about the upcoming event. Meanwhile, as the event approaches, there are many details that need to be taken care of inside the theater or arena. The facilities and maintenance department needs to make sure that everything is all set to run smoothly. If repairs have to be made within the building, they must be addressed quickly. All materials that will be sold as souvenirs, such as programs and t-shirts, need to be ordered and delivered along with refreshments and all of the necessary equipment. Up until right before show time there may be special deliveries that are requested by the performers. Finally, before the audience files in, all of the technical details must be in place. The lighting, curtains, props, scenery and special effects all must be ready. And then it's show time! Whether it's the Rockettes high stepping across the stage in Christmas attire or the Gypsy Kings launching into their opening number at a concert, the show you are seeing is the result of a lot of hard work by many people. So, even if you aren't exactly a graceful dancer, or haven't mastered your musical skills, there are many fun and rewarding jobs that you can do to help present great performances...plus, you get to watch.
