Article #8: Summer Survival and Your Eye Defense
Summer sunshine is great. But don't forget to protect your eyes. Prolonged UV exposure can damage your eyes, leading to cataracts and macular degeneration. Too much sun can even burn your eyelids.
Sunglasses, right?
Yes, but be aware. All sunglasses are
not created equal.
Choose sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVB and at least 95% UVA rays.
Those rated "UV 400 protection" are ideal. Wrap-around lenses can block nearly 5% more UV rays and will provide more protection. And if you're into active summer sports -- softball, biking, tennis -- consider impact resistant sunglasses.
To further enhance your eye protection, wear a hat in addition to sunglasses. It will greatly reduce your risk of sun related eye damage.
Summer was meant to be fun. Let's make it safe, too.
