Wappingers Falls, NY, April 24, 2012 - Students at Roy C. Ketcham High School participated in a Power to Learn event that focused on the dangers of "Cyberbullying." Also speaking on the topic to students and parents were Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro and New York State Senator Steve Saland.  Following welcoming remarks by Principal Thomas Stella, Senator Saland spoke about The Dignity For All Students Act, the passage of which he was instrumental in.  It will take effect on July 1, 2012 and is aimed at providing students with a safe and supportive environment, free from discrimination and harassment.  Media teacher Bob Wood next introduced participating students who presented PSAs (Public Service Announcements) they created relating to online bullying. Cablevision's Vice President of Education Trent Anderson then discussed Cablevision's "Delete Cyberbullying Pledge Drive" and introduced Orchard View Alternative High School teacher Jessica Brannen who, in turn, announced the first-place winning students from this school.  County Executive Molinaro spoke about cyberbullying and Mediation Center Executive Director Jody Miller spoke to parents on the importance of discussing online bullying with their children.

Said County Executive Molinaro, "Bullying in any form is difficult to deal with, especially when you are a teenager.  I was pleased to participate in this program today, and thank Power to Learn for creating innovative curricula that can be used to deliver such a powerful message in an unique and engaging way."

Senator Saland added, "The Internet is an integral part of everyday life for students today and it's crucial that they are taught the far-reaching repercussions that cyberbullying can have.  Thanks to programs like this one from Cablevision - and the passage of The Dignity For All Students Act - young people can better understand the importance of treating one another with dignity and respect."
