Long Island - "Kids Against Hunger" Awarded With A Donation On Behalf of Students At Lutheran High School February 10, 2012
Brookville, NY, February 10, 2012 - Power to Learn hosted a Charity Champions Check Presentation at Lutheran High School. The "Kids Against Hunger" club has come together to raise money for the Village of Hope School in Haiti. The School chose to focus on feeding the children of Haiti after the husband of one of their teachers, Jennifer Grene, served with the peacekeeping forces for the UN in Haiti. When Mrs. Grene visited him there, she was struck by the poverty in the country. Upon her return, the student body had begun focusing on helping this country in need. However, the devastation in Haiti further hit home for the school and its students two years ago when the massive earthquake occurred; Mrs. Grene lost her husband Andrew during the earthquake. Additionally, a number of students had relatives in Haiti, some of whom lost their loved ones in that terrible disaster. The students partnered with Kids Against Hunger who enable them to have a satellite site at which to package soy, rice, dried vegetables and seasoning mix in a factory-like setting to prepare nutritionally balanced meals for the hungry. These food packets are then shipped to the Village of Hope School and Clinic near Port au Prince, an official feeding site that prepares and serves the food to children, ensuring that children in need are fed. The school was presented with $1,000 to be donated to Kids Against Hunger and also received a donation of $500 to continue their charitable activities.
