Long Island - Kamp Kiwanis Awarded With A Donation On Behalf of Students At Ward Melville High School
February 2, 2012

East Setauket, NY, February 2, 2012 - Power to Learn and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn recognized students at Ward Melville High School for participating in this year's Charity Champions, a program from Power to Learn that promotes volunteerism and encourages area high schools to raise funds for a charity of their choice. At the event, Legislator Hahn recognized the students for their dedication to the charity and student advisor Allison Kane discussed the school's involvement with Charity Champions.  As part of their fundraising efforts, the students held a volleyball tournament, a Valentine's Day Dance, a Laser Tag event, and a Car Wash planned for June.  Kamp Kiwanis, operated by the New York District Kiwanis Foundation, is a non-competitive camp designed to mainstream all children including those with special needs, including up to 20 children in each session with special needs. The funds the students raise will send kids who may not be able to afford it to the camp. The school was presented with $1,000 to be donated to Kamp Kiwanis and also received $500 for the furtherance of the students' charitable activities.

"Any program that motivates young people to give back to others is terrific and I thank MSG Varsity and Power to Learn for bringing Charity Champions to our Ward Melville High School," said Legislator Hahn.  "The students involved in this effort are committed to raising money for children with special needs and have clearly demonstrated their passion for helping others."
