Long Island - Habitat For Humanity Awarded With A Donation On Behalf of Students At Connetquot High School
March 29, 2012

Bohemia, NY, March 29, 2012 - MSG Varsity and Cablevision's Power to Learn, along with Councilwoman Trish Bergin-Weichbrodt, recognized students at Connetquot High School for their fundraising efforts and participation in Charity Champions, a program developed by Power to Learn that promotes volunteerism and encourages area high schools to raise funds for a charity.  At the event, School Relations Manager for Power to Learn Kristen Thurber spoke about the Charity Champions program and Student Advisor Jason Wilans discussed the students' fundraising efforts, after which teacher and Board Member for the Suffolk Chapter of Habitat Charles Trupia spoke about the importance of the students' work.  Councilwoman Bergin-Weichbrodt also spoke and thanked the students for their dedication to such a worthy cause.  The school was presented with $1,000 to be donated to Habitat for Humanity and $500 for the furtherance of the students' charitable activities, which the students have decided to also donate toward their charity.

The students at Connetquot have supported Habitat for Humanity for over a decade as a High School Chapter because it affords students and staff the affirming opportunity to be part of a cause much greater than themselves. The students held 6 - 8 fundraising activities throughout the year. The exciting payoff is when 25-30 students participate in a "build" in the spring where they will raise the walls on the next student built home. They have sold "Entertainment Discount Books", "Cookie Dough", "Cakes and Pies", and more.
