February 2, 2012

Neptune, NJ, February 2, 2012 - Power to Learn, along with State Senator Jennifer Beck, Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini and Mayor Randy Bishop, recognized students at Neptune High School for participating in this year's Charity Champions, a program from Power to Learn that promotes volunteerism and encourages area high schools to raise funds for a charity of their choice. At the event, Senator Beck, Assemblywoman Angelini and Mayor Bishop recognized the students for their dedication to the charity and student advisor Catherine Crelin discussed the school's involvement with Charity Champions.  As part of their fundraising efforts, the students hosted bake sales, flower sales, sale of leprechaun ducks and other events.  Mary's Place by the Sea is a non-profit organization that provides a place for women with cancer to heal during and after treatment free of charge.

The school was presented with $1,000 to be donated to Mary's Place by the Sea and also received $500 for the furtherance of the students' charitable activities.

Senator Beck noted, "I would like to congratulate the students at Neptune High School for their commitment to raising funds for a deserving charity in our community.  It is truly heartening to see them embrace service to others so enthusiastically.  I also commend MSG Varsity and Power to Learn for recognizing their efforts."

"Giving to others is important for everybody.  For young adults, working with charities and doing volunteer work is especially important as it gives them a chance to focus on the needs of others," said Assemblywoman Angelini.  "I applaud MSG Varsity and Power to Learn for the Charity Champions program that motivates students to give back to others in need."

Mayor Bishop concurred, noting, "We are proud of all of the students involved in this fundraising program.  They are wonderful role models and they have picked a most deserving charity.  Mary's Place by the Sea allows a person to feel alive again with future possibilities and provides the utmost of dignity."
