New York City - Bronx, NY- Fifth graders at PS 119 share their insights on Cyberbullying and become Internet Smart.
May 29, 2009

Bronx, NY - May 29, 2009 - Cablevision’s Power to Learn, along with State Assemblyman Peter Rivera, recognized students at PS 119, who are now certified as “Internet Smart.”

Cyberbullying was the focus of the special event, where fifth-grade students gave presentations including a skit and many self-designed poster boards. Following welcoming remarks by Principal Lydia Tyner, Assemblyman Rivera and Cablevision’s Vice President of Government Affairs Adam Falk, the participating students performed a skit about instant messaging and how even a simple thing such as excluding other kids from popular topics is an example of cyberbullying. Students then presented on the consequences of cyberbullying, explaining the many ways being a bully can affect everyone's lives. They also spoke about warning signs and things to do to stop others from cyberbullying. Finally, several students presented tips to their teachers with regard to helping prevent cyberbullying.

Assemblyman Rivera then congratulated the students and presented them with a giant Internet Smart certificate. Students also signed a giant pledge, promising to help make a difference.

“The Internet has opened up many opportunities for students today,” said Assemblyman Peter Rivera. “That’s why it is so important that topics including cyberbullying and keeping personal information private online need to be addressed, as they impact all of our children. Programs such as Cablevision’s Internet Smarts help equip students with the knowledge and resources needed to safely use the Internet.”

Principal Lydia Tyner thanked Cablevision and applauded its Internet Smarts program, noting, “Thanks to Cablevision, our students are better prepared to take advantage of the many opportunities new technology affords them. Cablevision’s Internet Smarts helps students understand how to deal with topics such as cyberbullying, teaching safe and appropriate behavior online.”
