New York City - Bronx, NY - 8th Graders at the Forward School of Creating Writing celebrate Black History Month and the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
March 19, 2010

Bronx, NY, March 19, 2010 – 8th Graders at the Forward School of Creative Writing explored the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through an interactive program offered by Power to Learn and the History Channel. In attendance for the program was Assemblyman Carl E. Heastie. The program focused on the students’ exploration of the life of Dr. King using the History Channel’s documentary film entitled "King", which showed how and why Dr. King became a key catalyst for change and examined the indelible mark he left on the nation and the world. The students also participated in a live Q&A session via conference call with History Channel historian Dr. Kimberly Gilmore, as well as a discussion with Assemblyman Heastie.

Assemblyman Heastie applauded Cablevision’s Power to Learn for the black history program and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Young people today have a thirst for knowledge and want to learn more about important African-American figures and their role in American history,” noted Assemblyman Heastie. “Today’s History Channel documentary provided a wonderful opportunity to do just that.”

Principal Adrienne Phifer commented, “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Cablevision’s Power to Learn, in conjunction with the History Channel, for making this program available to the students at our school. It was both exciting and informative, and something each student will long remember.”
