WHAT IS INTERNET SMARTS

Internet Smarts, Power to Learn's signature initiative, encourages parents and teachers to work with children to examine issues arising from the use of digital media.

Internet Smarts provides Internet tools and resources that encourage not just safe, online practices, but ethical ones on issues as wide-ranging as copyright and cyberbullying.

Specifically, the Internet Smarts initiative is comprised of the following components:

Family Resource Guide - available in English and Spanish, this booklet answers common questions about digital communication and Internet use.

Online, Interactive Case Studies - designed for student use at home or in the classroom, these learning units, with accompanying parent and teacher guides, examine the following digital media issues:
What Parents Need to Know - online, interactive units that provide parents with in-depth, practical and “how to” information on topics covering:
Get Certified - After utilizing the content available at www.powertolearn.com users can test their knowledge of digital media issues and become certified "Internet Smart." After passing either an elementary or middle/high school online quiz students are invited to download a printable certificate.

Community Outreach - Power to Learn offers a variety of free community events, including teacher and parent trainings and in-school student presentations about Internet Smarts and media literacy. To schedule an event call Power to Learn at 516-803-2727.
Classroom Demonstrations - working with local elected officials Power to Learn presents workshops with individual classes on specific topics from Internet Smarts.
