Now commonly called Old Westbury Gardens, this was once the home of Jay Phipps. The mansion was completed in 1906 and is a fine example of an English-style estate. Phipps had promised his bride-to-be a home as nice as any to be found in Great Britain if she would move to America and be his wife. Phipps' father had been a partner to Andrew Carnegie in the steel business. The estate is famous for its lovely gardens which are surrounded by peaceful ponds. In 1959 the house and gardens were opened to the public.
