Walt Whitman was one of America's most influential poets. He was born in Huntington in1819. He lived in various Long Island towns and in Brooklyn. He founded a weekly newspaper called the Long Islander.
Whitman decided to start writing poetry in 1855. He wrote a book of poems called Leaves of Grass. For the rest of his life, he added to and improved this book (it began with 12 poems in 1855 and ended with 350 poems in 1891 when Whitman died). Whitman often wrote about nature and the beauty of life.
