When you work as a firefighter, it is important that you have health benefits. These benefits mean that if you get injured or sick, your company, in this case the FDNY, will pay the doctor or hospital bills.

Charles King is in charge of teaching new firefighters, employees of the fire department, and those members who have retired, about the health benefits that they can receive.

Public Speaking

Since much of the job is explaining what health benefits are all about, Charles took college courses in verbal communications and public speaking. In fact, Charles says that one of the reasons he likes his job is because he loves to talk! "The opportunity to express myself in front of people inspired me to take this career", he adds.

The opposite of speaking is listening, and Charles also studied how to be an effective listener. This means he learned to take in information that others were explaining and listen carefully to questions people ask about health benefits.

Along with public speaking skills, Charles says you need to be well groomed, have a pleasant personality and a desire to work with people to do this type of job effectively.
