As a New York City firefighter, Hisham has trained hard to be ready to respond to fires and other emergencies. It is important that he stays in top physical shape and is ready for action when such a situation arises.

Why A Firefighter?

Hisham, who is also an actor and model, chose firefighting after being a lifeguard as a teenager and later joining the Marines.

"Being a lifeguard really prepared me physically and mentally. I learned how to stay in shape and how to remain calm in stressful situations. The Marines Corps instilled discipline and mental toughness" says Hisham.

From The Pool to The Firehouse

Making the transition from teenage lifeguard to adult firefighter took several years of physical and emotional growth plus a lot of hard work. Hisham graduated high school, got his NYC drivers license and completed 30 college credits, all of which are required for a firefighter. He then went through the testing process, which includes a written test, on which he scored a 98 and a physical test on which he scored 100! Like everyone else who applies to become a firefighter, he was given a psychological exam and his background was checked before he was allowed to enter the academy where he would begin trainning. He is currently assigned to an Engine Company in Harlem.

What Should You Know?

Hisham says it is very important that you:

  • Take care of your body and stay in good physical shape.
  • Are comfortable working in high places.
  • Are able to work in all kinds of weather.
  • Are able to follow orders quickly.
  • Are flexible.
  • Are able to work well with other people and are a team player.
  • Have a good sense of humor.
  • Hisham takes great pride in being a firefighter. "When I was young, I would have long talks about my future with my dad. We talked about doing something that I would be proud of. Now, I'm very proud of what I do."
