If you would really like to get a feel for what it's like working for the fire department, while receiving valuable training you can do what Jasmin Hernaiz is doing and start out while you are still in college as a Fire Safety Cadet.
During the school year Jasmin puts in 60 hours a month and during July and August she works busy 40-hour weeks. Among other assignments she spends time explaining to people what the fire department does and what they should know about fire safety. She also talks to young people about the terrific lifetime opportunities that can be found working in the fire department as part of her recruitment assignment.
Requirements
Fire safety cadets participate in a program to prepare them for a challenging career as a NYC Firefighter. The training consists of instructions in Fire Safety Education, Basic Firefighting Procedures, Basic Fire Investigations, Certified First Responder Training, Health and Nutrition Information and Physical Fitness Training. To be considered for the the cadet corps you will first need a High School diploma, be enrolled in an accredited college and have at least 15 college credits.
Along with the "official" requirements, Jasmin notes some personal attributes that will help you in doing this job. "You need to have patience and be dedicated to the job. It's the kind of job you want to do because you want to make a difference in someone's life," says Jasmin.
When she is finished with school, Jasmin wants to become an EMT for the FDNY. As a qualified cadet she will be able to enter the academy and start her training.
