As a battalion chief, Philip Parr will be called upon for the important job of leading and commanding as many as 80 firefighters during fire fighting activities or in other emergency situations. Often several engine and ladder companies are called to a fire and supervision over these various teams of firefighters, all working together, is essential. Needless to say, this is a high-pressure job that requires tremendous attention to what is going on around you.

More Than Just A Job

A close friend whose dad was a firefighter encouraged Philip to pursue this career. He interviewed, trained and passed the required exams. "At first it was just a job," says Philip. "But as I learned more about being a firefighter, a sense of dedication and purpose grew until I could not imagine my life without being a firefighter."

Philip credits his ability to successfully perform his duties from lessons he's learned in life. "So much of this career choice is shaped by the experiences of your life," says Philip. He also credits organized team sports with helping him learn the mental toughness necessary to become a firefighter. In addition, he recommends doing volunteer work and gaining a sense of giving. "The sense of accomplishment you will feel will serve you well as a firefighter."

Special Skills & Qualities

Philip believes that his success as a battalion chief will be based on his ability to:

  • Show initiative.
  • Have organizational skills.
  • Have personal management skills.
  • Remember that listening and learning are keys to being successful.

"Most importantly you need integrity, the ability to command and the desire to answer the call and not look to someone else to do the job," adds Philip.
