Did you know that a fire marshal is not only a member of the fire department, but he or she is also a sworn in police officer? The job is often like being a detective, as the fire marshal is in charge of determining how the fire started. In some cases, when it has been discovered that someone started the fire intentionally, the fire marshal can make an arrest.

Randall Wilson is a fire marshal for the FDNY. He says that it is important to be physically fit, alert and have good written and verbal skills to do this job, because you will be taking notes about fires and talking with many different types of people. He not only needs to figure out how the fire started and write up a report, but he needs to explain to people why their property was destroyed or why someone they know lost their life as a result of the fire.

Starting As A Firefighter

All NYC fire marshals start as firefighters. They must have completed 60 college credits and take a difficult civil service exam to move to the rank of marshal. The experiences as a firefighter will prove very valuable on the job. Randall also points to computer skills and says you should work hard in science, math and English courses while in school. He strongly emphasizes the need to go on to college for any career choice.

Other Qualities

"You need to be honest, compassionate and have a strong sense of civic duty", says Randall. "You also need to be able to deal with people in severe situations to be a successful fire marshal", adds Randall.
