Fire prevention is an important part of the work done by the fire department. The chief of Fire Prevention oversees a bureau of individuals who work hard to make sure that anyone handling hazardous materials has the proper training and credentials to do so. The bureau also develops and gives tests to workers who will be working with materials that could cause a fire.
Stanley Dawe handles this very difficult job for the FDNY. His bureau supervises the demolition of buildings, fireworks displays and any other activities that might result in a fire or explosion. They also promote fire prevention throughout the city.
Special Skills
Besides a college degree, it takes a special set of skills to handle this type of job. First, public speaking and good written and verbal communications skills are required, since there is a great deal of contact with other people. It is also very important to know the NYC laws and rules pertaining to fire safety. Good decision making ability also counts, since you may have to decide whether or not a fireworks display or some other activity is safe enough to take place.
Moving On Up
Stanley started as a firefighter and took promotional exams to move up to his current position. He recommends that anyone interested in this type of career be aggressive and look for ways to move up to better jobs. He also adds that two important personal qualities for success are honesty and determination.
