The V.P. of Marketing and Communications has the job of figuring out ways to promote the Liberty. She helps the team generate revenue from ticket sales and by getting advertisers, or sponsors, to put their ads in the arena or their commercials on Liberty television broadcasts.

Amy Scheer handles this job for the Liberty. She works on new ways to increase ticket sales, which might mean a new advertisement, having the team involved in a community event or planning a special holiday promotion, such as a Father's Day contest for dads.

Is Everybody Ready?

Besides the players and coaches, many other people in the arena have jobs to do before, during and after a Liberty game. Amy has detailed worksheets that are prepared in advance that list everybody's game time responsibilities. She also has a game script that includes when everything around the game will take place from the singing of the National Anthem to the announcer saying good night to the fans as they leave the arena.

Amy checks to make sure the concession stands are open and ready to sell refreshments, the people who run the scoreboard are all set to do their jobs, the reporters all have seats at the reporters table, the dancers are ready to "get down" and even Maddie the Mascot is prepared to perform. In addition, Amy coordinates all the special events, like contests at halftime or videos that run on the scoreboard. Everything needs to be ready on game night!

Get Involved In Sports

You don't need to be a player to work in sports. "For me, playing professionally wasn't an option, so I decided to pursue the next best thing, working in the front office." says Amy. She went to school and studied sports management then did internships with the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority. his led to jobs at Giant's Stadium and even the racetrack. Then she was hired by the Nets of the NBA, where she worked for fifteen years doing many different jobs. Finally, she took the job with the Liberty.

Amy also recommends that you make contacts and try to gain experience in the sports field.
