An Associate Director wears several hats during the broadcast of a basketball game, but his or her primary responsibility is working with the Producer and Director to present the best possible broadcast of the pre-game show, the game and the post-game show. Among the many responsibilities of an Associate Director is gathering footage from previous games, watching tapes of the opposition and catching up on all the latest team news by talking with players, coaches and looking at the papers and stat sheets. It's also important to edit features that will run during the pre-game show..
Aenean diam nulla, imperdiet vel, feugiat quis, convallis sed, turpis. Praesent lobortis tincidunt velit. Cras pulvinar tincidunt turpis. Aliquam lacinia dapibus pede. Duis accumsan iaculis diam. Fusce lorem erat, consectetuer vitae, viverra vel, laoreet quis, dui. Vestibulum ante ipsum primis in faucibus orci luctus et ultrices posuere cubilia Curae; Nullam mi tortor, laoreet et, viverra eget, pretium eu, quam. Aliquam facilisis. Etiam condimentum, est sed tincidunt ultricies, augue dui ornare wisi, ut imperdiet leo metus in odio. Nullam in pede.
During the game, an Associate Director may be in charge of putting up the graphics you see on the screen during the telecast or handling the sound bytes and videos. After the game, the Assistant Director selects highlights of the game, using the various camera angles, for a highlight reel.
Bob Lalwani, Associate Director for the Liberty, worked as an intern at Madison Square Garden in the broadcasting area while finishing college. When he graduated, he had already established himself as a hard worker and was hired a few months later by Madison Square Garden. Knowledge of the game, passion for sports, attention to detail, creativity and patience are important characteristics that help Lalwani succeed at his job, which he also enjoys.
"You have to be passionate about the product you put out there," adds Lalwani "a lot of people depend on you for what they see." Lalwani has a sense of knowing what people want to see, which comes in part, from watching sports closely and paying close attention to the telecast. Nonetheless, he needs to carefully follow the instructions of the Director and work closely as part of the production team since he's only one of several key people involved in the telecast of a game.
An Associate Director job is marvelous for anyone who wants to merge their passions for sports and for broadcasting. It can be especially rewarding because you work in a team environment and can learn all the elements that go into televising a sporting event. The on-the-job training is invaluable and can lead those who excel into the Director's chair down the road.
