Marketing is a way of spreading the word about the team. The marketing coordinator helps plan and create the ads, posters, signs, promotional material and everything else that helps the media and the public get interested in the team.
Christie Howard does this job for the Liberty. She makes sure that all the art and photos look just right before they are used for promotional purposes. She also makes sure that all of the contests that take place during time-outs and at half time are set up before the game begins. In addition, she has the fun job of working with Maddie the Mascot to help plan what fun antics she will be up to during the game.
The L-I-B-E-R-T-Y Song
It's part of Christie's job to make sure the Liberty SUV is parked outside the arena before the games. The SUV plays the L-I-B-E-R-T-Y Song while a members of the marketing staff hand out free giveaway items to draw more fans into the arena. It's another way of promoting the Liberty.
After the game Christie makes sure all props and equipment used during the contests or to promote the team are cleaned up and put away. She also oversees the players autograph signing sessions. Liberty players sign autographs after each game for one lucky section of fans.
Women's Sports Fan
Christie is driven by her own desire to promote women's sports, so this is the perfect job for her. In fact, this is her first job after college! She played basketball at Emory College and realized the impact that marketing and promotion had on building a fan base for the team. "I've played sports throughout my life, therefore I understand the big picture and mission of our league," says Christie about the WNBA. She also adds that she is very motivated to come to work everyday and feels that you need to believe in what you are doing to be good at it. "If I meet someone on the street, for example, who has no clue what the Liberty is, I take it upon myself to inform this person of the team, the excitement and the benefit of being part of the Liberty experience. It is my job to promote the team."
