When the stage is set for the opening jump ball, and the strains of Van Halen's "Jump" come across the PA system, it is because someone decided to play that particular song at that particular moment. Yes, the game has a deejay of sorts providing the music and an assistant to make sure the music chimes in at the right moment.
The Event Presentation Manager works with the Director of Event Presentations to handle the music and videos. Each selection needs to be lined up to be played and banked, or stored, accordingly. The music needs to be ready to go as soon as the whistle blows for a time-out or the situation warrants that the team needs a musical boost.
Jennifer MacLure, Event Presentation Assistant for the Liberty and the Knicks, started out doing internships while in college. She interned at a talk show in New York City and then at MTV and VH-1. This helped prepare her for a job after college where she worked in production on various shows and on promos at the two cable music networks. From there she made the move to into sports.
"My career experience brought me here" says MacLure. "I never planned to work in sports. Now I enjoy setting the mood for 20,000 people. You have to be flexible, keep an open mind and explore job opportunities."
For someone who enjoys music, videos and sports, working in such a capacity is a fun way to combine all three interests. Since there is an increasing combination of sports and music, with videos and exciting multimedia and pre-game presentations, more opportunities for this type of job are becoming available. Jennifer suggests that while watching a game, you pay special attention to the music that is played, the half-time entertainment and all that takes place around the game and think about how you might put your own "spin" on the game's entertainment.
