When a player steps to the foul line for a couple of free throws, you might seethe player's foul shooting statistics for that game or perhaps for the season on your television screen. At the start of the second half, you'll see a breakdown of the first half statistics. The Graphics Coordinator has the job of putting up all of the statistics and other graphic information that will appear on your screen during a telecast. The job requires keeping abreast of all recent stats for the players and for the team during the season, including recent hot or cold streaks. There are also special features that need to be edited together that require graphics and even sound bytes, including player comments, taken from interviews, that are aired during the game. Putting these together is also part of the job of the Graphics Coordinator.

The Madison Square Garden Network hires Spencer Julien between the months of October and June to handle the position for both the Knicks and the Liberty. On game day, Julian arrives early and spends hours updating the graphics based on the latest statistics and player information available. He will then prepare for game time, which means making sure all preliminary statistical information is accurate and ready to be posted.

Julien had a passion for sports, an eye for detail and an ability to work well with others. He made a decision that he wanted to pursue a career in sports and started after college as an intern working at Madison Square Garden in the production department for the MSG Network. After the internship, he freelanced for a year before being hired as a Videotape Librarian in the fall of 1997.

"It's important to know the game and know what's important to the viewer," says Julian about combining his sports and his production sense. "You have to prepare yourself and learn these areas. The more you prepare, the better off you are."

It takes great concentration to accurately present the right graphics as the game proceeds. The next time you watch a game on television, take note of the many graphics that appear. You'll see they pop up often and at the right moment. That's all thanks to the Graphic Coordinator/Associate Producer.
