Marketing is important for any hockey team. Whether the team is winning or losing, it is necessary to promote the excitement of the sport and fill the seats with fans. Janet Duch is the Vice President of Marketing Services for the New York Rangers. In this capacity Janet helps the team generate revenue from ticket sales and by convincing advertisers and, or, team sponsors, to put their ads in the arena or their commercials on Ranger’s television broadcasts.

She studied marketing, advertising and journalism in college and graduated with a BA in Journalism-Mass Communications, with an emphasis in advertising. Today, she uses her creative and organizational skills to help spread the word about the Rangers.

No two days are quite the same for Janet. One day she will be doing research for a commercial script and the next day she night be planning a special promotional event. The variety of responsibilities is what she enjoys most about the job.

Spurred On By a Love Of Sports

In college, while playing for the volleyball team, Janet suffered a serious back injury that ended her playing career. Wanting to stay involved in sports, she pursued sports marketing. While still in college, she took an internship with the Woman's Sports Foundation. She also volunteered for the sports marketing department at her school.

After graduating, Janet, who always had a passion for hockey, took a job with the Rangers on the PR game night staff. This meant helping with promotional giveaways at home games. From there she took an assistant marketing job with the New York Liberty of the WNBA where she honed her skills before returning to the Rangers.

Follow Your Dreams

Janet refused to let an injury end her affiliation with sports. She followed her dreams of working in sports and recommends that you work hard to follow your own dreams as well. She also recommends starting out by doing volunteer work and an internship to help you learn about an industry before trying to get your foot in the door.
