The use of videotape in sports has become quite significant. Besides showing fans replays of great plays and exciting highlights, videotape allows players and coaches to see what the team does well, and in which areas they can improve. It also presents an opportunity to scout other teams in advance before playing them.
Jerry Dineen is the video analyst the New York Rangers. He reviews and analyzes the tapes of opponents and that discusses his findings with the Ranger’s coaching staff. A thorough knowledge of hockey is necessary to evaluate the play of other teams.
From The Ice to The Editing Room
Jerry has loved hockey for many years. His dad was an NHL coach, so you could say he grew up around the sport. He played hockey for Plattsburg State College in New York.
After graduating, his dad helped him line up an interview, which led to his current position. Meanwhile, Jerry spent time honing his editing skills. Now, on a typical day he will spend time at the practice facility, looking at game tapes. He reviews the various tape categories including Power Plays, Penalty Killing, 5 on 5 and so on. Jerry then meets with the coaches once he has put together the tapes they will be watching.
Inspired by his dad and his brothers, who played professional hockey, Jerry says that if you want to pursue this type of career, you need to be patient, have organizational skills, work hard, learn about the game and do whatever it takes to get your foot in the door.
