As the Director of Event Presentation, Ryan Halkett oversees the in-arena show for all New York Rangers games. This means that he is responsible for all of the entertainment fans experience at Madison Square Garden during Rangers games, including the music, videos and any special performances. “My overall responsibility is to create a unique experience through entertainment,” says Ryan, who goes through hours of videos while planning the entertainment for a game.
Using A Lot of Skills
To manage event presentations in front of a large crowd, you need to be creative, well organized, be able to think fast, solve problems that may arise, and manage a large staff.
Ryan also explains that it helps to have experience in event management and broadcast TV. “I started working in field marketing and events,” says Ryan, who has his college degree in Business Administration. “I established a network of contacts in the sports industry and never gave up,” he adds.
A Love of The Game
Ryan started playing hockey at the age of two and has always loved the game. That, coupled with his knack for working closely with others, has helped him excel in his chosen field. In addition, he credits technology, business, math and physical education classes as being beneficial prior to college, and marketing, finance and computer technology courses as being most helpful in college.
For those who would like to follow in Ryan’s footsteps, he suggests getting as much experience as you can in event management and preparation. You also need to understand and know how to use technology to your advantage. “Sports is a hard business to get into,” says Ryan, adding; “Get involved at a grass roots level and work your way up.”
