The President & General Manager of a hockey team has significant responsibilities. He runs the entire organization. Like any high level executive, he needs a top-notch, highly competent person to provide assistance answering phones, writing correspondences, making travel arrangements, drafting contracts and maintaining employee files.

Sara Adamson is the Executive Assistant to the President & General Manager of the New York Rangers. To excel in her position, she combines strong organizational skills, computer skills and the ability to handle, and prioritize many tasks at one time. In addition, Sara says it's important to work well with many different types of people.

Busy Days

Most days for Sara are quite busy, particularly during the hockey season when she not only works a nine-to-five schedule but also needs to be available in the evenings for home games and on weekends for special promotions and events. "No two days are alike," says Sara, who may be handling anything from player contract issues to getting tickets for friends of the players to responding to fan requests for autographs.

The Road From Edmonton

Sara went to college at the University of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, where she majored in French. She then received a Bachelor of Law Degree and credits many of the courses she took while earning that degree with helping to make her an organized thinker and good negotiator. She believes that all of your courses can be important. "You can glean something from every course you take that can be useful later in your career and in your life in general".

After working for a law firm for a while, Sara got to use her training and her love for hockey while serving as an in-house lawyer for the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL. Being a small office, Sara handled many other administrative duties as well. When her boss, Oilers' coach Glen Sather, left the team to take a position with the Rangers, he asked her to come and work for him in New York City.

If you want a job like Sara's, she suggests that you have good computer skills, good organizational skills and get a few years of experience before working for a top executive. "You should also look into an industry that interests you such as sports, law, medicine or business."
