As producer of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Jill DeForte coordinates the many aspects of this very big and elaborate show. "I handle all the elements of the show, including scenery, costumes, and the content of the show," explains Jill, who works long hours, including nights and weekends during the busy show season which runs from September through January, including rehearsals and performances.

"You need to be able to work under pressure and have patience," notes Jill, of the demanding position. "It gets very hectic during the Christmas season when we are running six shows a day, so it is pertinent that you can have patience with people. It is also important to be detail oriented because paying attention to detail is what will make things run smoothly," she adds.

Love what You Do

"I was determined to get a job that I really loved and wanted to do," says Jill, who graduated from Villanova University with a BA in English/Literature. "I always had a passion for theatre and acting, and Radio City was the perfect opportunity for me to pursue my career," adds Jill.

Along with having a passion for this type of career, Jill notes the importance of being comfortable working with many different types of people, since putting together a show of this proportion takes a team effort. She also believes that a college education with an interest in business, plus a knowledge of stage terms is helpful.

If You Love The Theater...

Many producers, directors and others involved in putting together shows, such as the Christmas Spectacular, started off pursing acting careers, as was the case with Jill. However, when she saw that acting wasn't working out, she decided that since she loved theater, she would pursue a role backstage. "My theater classes taught me a lot of the stage terms and showed me how to run a successful show," explains Jill, who also did a variety of internships throughout school which included working at a local television station and in a public information office. In 1992, she began working at Radio City Music Hall in the Concerts and Events division. Then, in 1998, she switched over to working with the Christmas Spectacular.

Jill, who takes great pride in being a major part of a legendary show, which is seen by over one million people each year, recommends that anyone looking to get into theatrical production, should get involved and participate in theater to gain positive experiences. "Also listen to people within the business and ask lots of questions. People are always willing to help, so it's important that you use them as guides since they know this industry first hand," explains Jill.
