The Rockettes were originally formed in 1925. More than 80 years later, they are still going strong as the world's most famous high-kicking precision dance team. The responsibility of coordinating their busy schedule is a fulltime job, and that position is held by Lindsay Bell.
Along with communicating and confirming rehearsals, events, opening nights, auditions and media/PR activities with the Rockettes, Lindsay also logs and maintains various records which include: Creating a "Head Shot Book" of active Rockettes and a reference handbook; processing new hire paperwork and address changes; collecting updated head shots and resumes; maintaining files of union contracts and filing any and all paperwork associated with employment, including evaluations and feedback.
Lindsay also serves as the liaison between the Rockettes and all other Radio City Music Hall departments, including Costume and Wardrobe, Employee and Human Resources, Sponsorship and Marketing and Community Relations.
Leadership Skills Are Important
"A proven track record of leadership and organization, plus excellent communication skills and the ability to work under pressure, and meet deadlines are all important to doing this job well," says Lindsay, who adds that being proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word are also necessary. In addition, according to Lindsay, it helps to be personable, able to multi-task and work well under pressure.
From The Job Fair to the Job
Lindsay first got the job after attending the 2005 MSG Job Fair. "I completed four internships during college and kept my options open. I knew I wanted to work in New York City," says Lindsay, who always had an interest in the entertainment industry. Courses in journalism and public speaking proved beneficial while she was at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication, with specialization in Advertising and Promotions.
Based on her own experiences, Lindsay highly recommends internships. "This is the best experience for college students. I had an internship going into my senior year at a PR firm in New York and it was the most beneficial and motivational thing that could have happened to me," says Lindsay, who believes that you should not give up easily. "It took me four months to find this job. I was living at home, with no money and no job but I wouldn't settle until someone in New York offered me a job," she adds.
