Inside the Senate

The New York State Senate acts in conjunction with the State Assembly and with the Governor to create, revise or abolish laws. The process of turning an idea into a new law takes time. There is usually a great deal of discussion and often debate before a law is passed. It is important that pending laws, known as bills, are carefully evaluated and that those who oppose a bill get to voice their concerns before the vote is taken. Behind the scenes there are numerous jobs that keep the operations of the Senate running smoothly. Senators have their own staff members assisting them in both Albany and in their district offices throughout the state. Senators can contact the Senate Personnel Office and request new staffers to fill jobs that may include handling such tasks as; entering computer data, doing research on legislation in the Senate Library, meeting with constituents, handling communication with the media, writing press releases or helping to maintain a senator’s busy calendar. The Senate Personnel Office keeps resumes on file and is ready to fill the needs of the many senators. If you visit the Capitol building in Albany, you will see staff members for each New York State Senator busily working, especially during the months that the senate is in session.
