Cooley High (1975) - PG
Set in Chicago in the mid 1960s, this story centers on a group of high school friends from "the projects." It begins as a typical (and humorous) snapshot of life in an urban high school - even though it's almost 40 years ago. Things change, however, when the two main characters meet a pair of career criminals and end up being falsely accused and arrested for stealing a car. The movie follows the characters' quest to prove their innocence in dramatic fashion. Cooley High stars Garrett Morris of Saturday Night Live fame and Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs of Welcome Back Kotter fame.
Questions for reflections and/or discussion:
- Do you think that the school portrayed in the movie is similar to high schools today?
- Do you think that movies that are both funny and dramatic are better to watch that movies that are completely comedic or completely dramatic?
- How does the music play a role in the film?
