"It's not how smart you are but how you are smart." - Dr. Howard Gardner, Harvard University
Multiple Intelligences theory grew out of a project at Harvard School of Education entitled Project Zero, which sought a new way to understand and define human cognition in the early 1980's. It had an immediate and powerful impact.
Dr. Howard Gardner, who introduced MI theory, defined nine intelligences that provided groundbreaking insight into how humans achieve in their world and revolutionized the way educators thought about the abilities of their students.
MI theory holds that the traditional methods of institutionally evaluating human intelligence, such as IQ and SAT tests, are incomplete. The belief that intelligence consists of ability in logic and language only ignores a range of ways that individuals interact with and succeed in the world.
The nine intelligences are:
· Linguistic · Logical/mathematical · Visual-spatial · Musical · Interpersonal
Artsgenesis, an non-profit educational organization creates and conducts arts-accelerated learning programs based on multiple intelligences theory. It was founded on the belief that the arts can unlock the ability to learn.
