The Director of Marketing for Concerts & Attractions is in charge of spreading the word about upcoming events in an effort to sell tickets. To promote such events, the marketing department uses a wide range of advertising and promotional materials, including print ads, posters, billboards and commercials.

Connie Frances Avila handles this busy job for Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden. If, for example a concert is booked at Radio City, she will work with the many people involved in presenting the show, including the record company and the manager, agent and publicist for the band. She will gather materials about the band and their upcoming show and then get the information to as many media outlets as possible, including television and radio stations, newspapers and magazine.

Working Her Way Into The Music Business
To get this important job, Connie started out by studying Communication at New York University and did internships at the nearby K-Rock radio station. Connie explains "I was aggressive and wanted to learn the ins and outs of the music industry, the things I would not have learned in a classroom."

After her first job, she knew she loved the music business. She went on to work at another popular New York radio station, WPLJ, and at Atlantic Records before taking the job at Radio City Entertainment.

On a typical day Connie will review the artwork for posters and all material that will go on the websites to promote the shows. She will also make sure to get some excellent photos from the record company to use in the promotional materials. Then she must figure out the best places to promote each show. For example, she would need to contact the hip-hop radio stations and websites to promote an upcoming hip-hop concert.

A Music Lover
For Connie Frances Avila, the love of her life has always been music. Even her name Connie Frances was that of a famous singer. She knew the words to all her favorite songs even before she had a favorite bedtime story.

She suggests that if you like music, that you study music and try to find a mentor, or someone who can help you learn about the job and tell you about how the companies work so you will know the best way to promote shows.
