For Teachers

Watershed Worries: Protecting the Quality of Our Water consists of the following components that can be used individually or together as a learning unit in your classroom:
  • A self-guided, interactive puzzle called Before the Flood that challenges students to piece together events surrounding a flood and presents important information on water quality and flood safety. The puzzle is aligned to state standards for New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Learning Objectives that correspond to the puzzle are also provided.

  • Downloadable video clips from After the Storm, an episode in the Forecast Earth series on The Weather Channel. The program examines the connection between weather and watersheds and discusses the importance of watershed protection.

  • A chance to Ask the Expert! Are your students wondering exactly what a watershed is or how everyday pollutants might be affecting their groundwater? Experts from the Environmental Protection Agency and The Weather Channel are ready to answer their questions.

  • Additional Resources that point you to more information on water quality, flooding and severe weather safety, and what you can do to help protect the environment.
Plus, visit http://www.weatherclassroom.com to register and download lesson plans that accompany After the Storm. Aligned to National Science Education Standards, the lessons are targeted to grades 5-12 and focus on informative topics such as surface and groundwater quality, community design with respect to runoff, and water consumption versus water supply.
