High School: Personal Homage
Aaron Copland was commissioned to write Lincoln Portrait just days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1942. It is a thirteen minute piece which features the words of Abraham Lincoln, often narrated by a celebrity speaker while the music is playing. Have students study a famous person they admire from history, using works of art, texts, web resources, and/or media clippings. Using this research have them respond to these resources in either group or class format and create either a written, musical, or visual portrait of that individual, keeping in mind elements of personality, character, social status, etc.
