As a result of personal teaching methods and preference of activities, the New York State Learning Standards applied below may change, and are only a suggested approach toward organizing your lessons.
High School: Mexican Connection
After a memorable trip to Mexico, Aaron Copland was inspired to compose El Salón México (1932-1936). Copland said, "Europe now seems conventional to me by comparison. Mexico offers something fresh and pure and wholesome -a quality which is deeply unconventionalized." Have students cover a unit of study on Mexico, and in oral and/or written form develop a connection to the Mexico that inspired Copland to create this wonderful piece of music.
