High School: Poetry in Music
Copland was inspired to create music to accompany the poetry of Emily Dickinson. He felt that her work related to the folk culture he admired. In 1949, he composed music for twelve of her poems beginning with "The Chariot," which opens:

Because I could not stop for Death,
he kindly stopped for me;
the carriage held but just ourselves
and immortality
Have your students read the poetry of Emily Dickinson or other favorite poets as an inspiration tool. Brain-storm thoughts, ideas, or visual imagery in a journal, notebook or sketchbook, then use these as inspiration for a visual, musical or written work.
