Go To Lesson Activities
As a result of personal teaching methods and preference of activities, the New York State Learning Standards applied below may change, and are only a suggested approach toward organizing your lessons.

Elementary and Intermediate: Color by Music
Students can create their own works of art while listening to the music of Aaron Copland. Choose two distinct musical works by Aaron Copland (i.e. Fanfare for the Common Man and Appalachian Spring) and have your students create two drawings while listening to the music. Brain-storm shapes, colors, and evoked emotions related to specific sounds. During their creative process, students should apply these relationships in visual form assigning certain colors and shapes to specific sounds that they hear. As a class, discuss and analyze the contrasts between student works, and Copland's works of art.
