As a result of personal teaching methods and preference of activities, the New York State Learning Standards applied below may change, and are only a suggested approach toward organizing your lessons.
Elementary and Intermediate: Folk Art and Music
Aaron Copland, Grant Wood, and many American artists from the twentieth century were interested in and influenced by folk art and music. Folk art and music were produced for hundreds of years by untrained artists, who were inspired to create as a result of their communal relationships and social expectations. In his piece, Appalachian Spring, Aaron Copland uses the folk melody from the Shaker song Simple Gifts throughout. Have students observe and analyze the essence of the American folk artists, and then create a series of visual narrative works, focusing on their individual social and family obligations and events.
